But I've walked into too many basements where the framing shortcuts taken during construction are now driving moisture problems, mold, or outright code violations. Insulation Strategy

The correct approach in our climate is typically to insulate the wall cavity AND the rim joist (the wood framing just above the foundation wall where the floor structure sits). The rim joist is one of the biggest air and thermal leaks in a Michigan home — it's often overlooked in basement finishing.

Rigid foam insulation directly against the foundation wall, with stud framing built 1–2 inches away from the wall (not against it), is the detail that separates professional basement framing from the kind that creates moisture traps.

Egress Windows and Code Requirements

If any finished room is intended to be used as a bedroom, Michigan's building code requires a proper egress window — a window large enough to escape through in an emergency. This has minimum dimensions (typically 5.7 sq ft opening, 20" wide, 24" tall, sill no higher than 44" from the floor). Framing bedrooms without egress is both a code violation and a safety issue that will surface at resale.

What This Looks Like on Real Jobs

On a recent basement finish in Sterling Heights, the homeowner had existing framing from a previous unfinished attempt — pressure-treated plates correctly installed, but wall studs had been run directly against the poured concrete with no gap.
